What are Aluminum Composite Panels?

Alcotpanel is made using lightweight but rigid and durable aluminum composite material (ACM)—two strong sheets of aluminum bonded to a solid polyethylene core. The panel is coated on one side with a white polyester finish and a mill finish (polished aluminum) on the other side. The panel is 3mm thick (without the canvas) and is available in sizes from 8 x 10 to 20 x 24 inches.

Weather-resistant Alcotpanels are ideal for a wide range of paint mediums including these:

  • Acrylic
  • Oil
  • Oil-resin
  • Oil-alkyd

Artefex Alcotpanels offer a superior support for painting compared to wood panels because ACM panels have very low response to environmental changes, such as relative humidity (RH) and temperature.

Acrylic-Primed Canvas

Acrylic-primed (sometimes called “universal priming”) Alcotpanels are available with cotton-polyester blend canvas with a plain weave in medium, fine and extra-fine textures.

Universally-primed Artefex canvas panels are primed with acrylic binder and titanium dioxide and zinc oxide pigments.

Why BEVA 371 Adhesive?

BEVA 371 is an adhesive used in conservation to mount canvas and paper to rigid supports. BEVA 371 was developed by Gustav Berger, a renowned conservation researcher, after initiating a research program investigating lining adhesives for paintings. A series of formulations were developed, composed of a combination of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), waxes and ketone resins. After subjecting the combinations to accelerated aging environments involving heat- and light-aging, the best combination was selected—BEVA 371.

Many studies have shown BEVA 371 to be an excellent adhesive. It adheres well, remains flexible and is soluble to solvents that do not damage oil paint.

One of the many advantages of BEVA 371 is that it does not cross-linking over time and that, if used properly, it can be easily removed from fragile artwork without staining or damage. In other words, the adhesive is reversible, so that if the panel should become damaged the canvas can be removed without damage to the painting.
